Be Authentic

Can you tell a fake? Imitations come in many varieties-diamonds, watches, or purses to name a few.  What about people? I am thinking specifically of individuals in leadership. Leaders who hide behind masks or create façades will be quickly detected as a fake when they are not being authentic.

Do you wear a disguise? Have you created a façade to hide behind? Your coworkers and employees will quickly identify disingenuousness in their leaders. This masquerade can lead to mistrust and a lack of loyalty from your peers. As a leader, you must be willing to reveal your authentic self and be genuine with those you serve. Let your authenticity shine by relating honestly to others. Connecting with your coworkers on a non-work related matter or sharing a struggle you have experienced during your career path are examples of authentic interactions. People want to be led by a genuine individual. Being your authentic self will serve you well in life and leadership.

“This above all, to thine own self be true.”-William Shakespeare
